Codpieces

in Breughel's 'Wedding Dance'

Our eyes quickly catch the bulges

Among the tights and crotches

The ample hips of buxom women

Beneath apron and wide skirts

And our oh’s are wide with wonder

What failure of male modesty dictated

This flagrant prominent display

Are they so happy for the couple

All seem ready for an orgy or what

Renaissance of nature’s urge bid them

Proclaim their hunger or ecstasy?

We read somewhere Breugel’s change

Was in subject of pigment and portrait

From the sacred to the ordinary

The sacrosanct to simple folk’s drollery

And the looming democracy of manners

And sausages instead of the saintly

But these sacs and pouches (so we read

Some more) were originally meant

To hold up and protect what was inside

But now were worn to show and emphasize

Maybe even compensate for size

Our oh’s become wiser as we trace

The history of male crotch pieces

Noting how they gradually shrank

In the period portraits of royalty

How this duke or that grandee eventually

Lost the once precious bulge and

Perhaps long before Magellan stumbled

Over it was no longer so fashionable

(Though Down Under they wore sheaths

As long and baritone as the digeridoo)

But our forefathers have long known

The undisplayed virtues of sewn-in bolitas

And the magical ring of goat’s eyelashes
