Lahar! Dumidilang lahar!
Mausok na wika ng sanlibong diwata.
Sa oras ng bulkan
Simbigat ng tingga ang mga sandali.
May salita ngunit abo.
May talata
Ngunit bato.
Mga siglo ng abo sa himpapawid;
Mga kasaysayang naging bato.
Ang bulkan ang sentro,
Sumusulak na dibdib,
Binulag ng poot
Sa lahat
Ng di namin maunawaan;
Ang bukal ng tekstong walang pangalan,
Ang sugong kuwago para sa mga naglalamay;
At napatda ang politika
Ng matatalim at mapaglarong simoy.
Ang bulkan ang sentro
Ngunit walang sentro.
Isang daigdig na walang sentro
Sa oras ng bulkan.
Puro patlang. Abuhing mga patlang.
Purong kamatayan:
Sinlinis at sindalisay ng abo't bato.
Ito ba ang huling awit?
Sino ang pipigil sa huling pagbibihis
Ng engkantadong balahibo?
Nagiging abo ang lahat. Lahar
At bato.
Lahar! Platinong gagamba ng pangamba,
Hila-hila'y hibla ng maputla't malagkit
Na kamatayan:
Hiblang hinugot sa apdo ng lupa,
Hiblang simbagsik ng sinaunang sumpa,
Hiblang walang-patid ang kamandag,
Hiblang asintado, kasintiyak ng taga sa bato.
Lahar! Lahar!
Likido't mabuhangin
Ang dulot mong kamatayan:
Dumudurog sa aming mata,
Umiinis sa aming lalamunan;
Sumusuot na metalikong alupihan
Sa bitak ng tumana't sampalok,
Sa bunganga ng lupaypay na poso,
Sa matamlay na pinto't durungawan,
Sa muwelye ng industriya't transportasyon;
Sungayang sumisigsig sa semento't alkitran,
Ngumangasab sa alambre't bakal,
Ngumangatngat sa poste't tulay,
Lumuluray sa anumang palatandaan ng kabihasnan.
Abacan. Clark Field. Mabalacat. Bamban. Porac.
Bacolor. Lubao. Sasmuan. Concepcion.
San Marcelino. San Narciso. San Fernando. San Felipe.
Floridablanca.
Maapog na pulut ng panatikong putakti't pukyutan.
Alimbukay ng napuksang sigaw ng anuang at tamaraw.
Vertigo ng biktima't abo ng pinulbos na nakaraan.
Idianale, Poko, Damolag, Lalahon, Dian Masalanta,
Anong baliw na kapangyarihan ang nag-atas
Isabog ang ganitong kasawian?

Lahar! Platinum spider of fear.
Spinning filaments of pale, viscous
Death:
Filaments plucked from the bile of earth,
Filaments as potent as an ancient curse,
Taut, unsnapping filaments of venom,
Filaments of deadly aim, unbreakable promise
Of knife on stone.
Lahar, Lahar!
The death you bring
Is liquid, full of grit:
Shattering our eyeballs,
Rasping our throats;
Silver centipede slinking
Into fissures of tamarind and parched earth,
Into spouts of spent water pumps,
Into lifeless doorways and windows,
Into wheel and spring of industry and conveyance;
Horns scouring concrete and asphalt,
Maws devouring wire and metal,
Gnawing at bridges and electric poles,
Tearing at every sign of civilization.
Abacan. Clark Field. Mabalacat. Bamban. Porac.
Bacolor. Lubao. Sasmuan. Concepcion.
San Marcelino. San Narciso. San Fernando. San Felipe.
Floridablanca.
Lime-filled honey secreted by fanatic bees.
Echoing groans of dying carabaos and tamaraws.
Vertigo of victim and ash of the crumbled past.
Idianale, Poko, Damolag, Lalahon, Dian Masalanta,
What demented power decreed
This calamity?
Lahar! Emissary of death,
Mad negotiator,
Without flag or mineral,
Acrobatic assassin,
The sun blinked at the cruel irony:
Borders were erased, rivers rose
To the level of their banks,
Landmarks and fences vanished,
Symbols and standards melted,
The commerce of scad and crab ceased,
Buried in the same justice of sand:
The Educated and the Tribesman,
The Nuclear and the Crock,
The Rust and the Plow,
The Hacienda and the Mire,
The Cross and the Christ,
And peace reigned in the vast plain—
Gray and antiseptic peace.
From the chunked rockface
And plastic city of tents and charity,
But for the isle of the quick goat and frog,
And the drifting refuge of the desperate snail,
And petrified limbs of acacia and coconut,
Of one color are leaf and petal,
Of one complexion the barrio and town,
Of one taste and voice the wind:
Lahar! All is lahar.
No crowflight can measure
The ancient sheet and gray stench
Of the volcano hour:
Pinatubo/ Pinatubo
(Halaw/ Excerpt, con't)
PINATUBO is one of three long poems in Muli, Sa Kandungang ng Lupa, in the chapter called 'Tatsulok ng Unos' or 'Typhoon Triangle'. The other two are 'Noon at Smokey Mountain' and 'Marag.' They are landmark pieces in Rio Alma's poetry (each of his books usually has one or more long poems included), which the critic Isagani Cruz terms 'poems of epic contemplation.' Muli is concluded with another long poem titled 'Oriental.'

Lahar! Flicking tongues of lahar!
Seething speech of a thousand goddesses.
In the volcano hour
The seconds fall like lead.
There are words but they are ash.
There are verses
But they are stone.
Aeons of ash in the air:
Histories turned to stone.
The volcano is the center,
Boiling bosom,
Rage blinded
By all things
We cannot understand;
The source of text without name,
The messenger owl for those in death-wake;
And the politics of the knife-edged,
Whimsical wind was stunned.
The volcano is the center
But there is no center.
A world without center
In the volcano hour.
Pure vacant space. Gray vacant space.
Pure death:
Pure and pristine as ash and stone.
Is this the final song?
Who will stop the last shedding
Of the enchanted plumes?
Everything becomes ash. Lahar
And stone.

Lahar! Sugo ng kamatayan,
Barumbadong negosyador,
Walang watawat at mineral,
Akrobatikong asesino,
Napapikit ang araw sa malupit na parikala:
Nabura ang mga hanggahan, nagpantay
Ang ilog at ang pampang,
Naparam ang mohon at bakod ng ari-arian,
Natunaw ang inimpok na pamantayan at sagisag,
Nalagot ang komersiyo ng galunggong at talangka,
Nabaon sa iisa't makatarungang buhangin
Ang Edukado't ang Baluga,
Ang Nuklear at ang Palayok,
Ang Kalawang at ang Araro,
Ang Asyenda at ang Pusali,
Ang Krus at ang Kristo,
At umiral sa buong kapatagan ang kapayapaan --
Abuhin at antiseptikong kapayapaan.
Lahar. Lahar lahat.
Di-maliparang uwak
Ang sinaunang kumot at abuhing alingasaw
Ng oras ng bulkan:
